The recent loss of seven dogs in the Venice Canals neighborhood has shaken the local community and left pet owners fearful and searching for answers. As a
veterinarian with decades of experience, I urge every pet parent to take this matter seriously. If your previously healthy dog suddenly falls ill or dies, you must request a forensic necropsy. This could be the key to solving what is becoming a tragic pattern.

What’s Happening in Venice?
The Los Angeles County Veterinary Public Health Program (VPH) is currently investigating reports of dogs experiencing sudden and severe illness, some dying
Within hours of symptom onset. These cases all seem to be linked geographically to the Venice Canals area.
Clinical Signs Reported:

  •  Vomiting
  • Inappetence (loss of appetite)
  • Sudden lethargy and weakness or even paralysis (paresis)
  •  Seizures or tremors
  • Sudden collapse

Many of these dogs were young or middle-aged and had no prior health issues.

Why a Forensic Necropsy Matters
A forensic necropsy is more detailed than a standard autopsy. It can:
 Detect exposure to toxins like pesticides, rodenticides, or contaminated water
 Identify infectious agents or metabolic diseases
 Preserve crucial evidence if criminal negligence or environmental hazards are
involved

Without this level of examination, we lose critical information that could prevent more deaths.

Advice for Pet Owners
Until the source of these illnesses is discovered, I recommend the following precautions for all pet parents:
When Walking Your Dog:
 Keep your dog on a leash
 Supervise closely—do not allow sniffing, eating, or licking anything off the
ground
 Avoid the Venice Canals entirely—keep pets away from the water and
surrounding vegetation
 Do not let your dog drink from standing water
 Carry your own water and bowl
If your dog shows any of the symptoms mentioned above, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

Advice for Veterinary Professionals
Veterinarians should:
 Take detailed histories, including:
o Exact walking routes
o Recent dietary changes
o Possible exposure to toxins or new treats
o Any water contact or ingestion
 Report suspected cases to VPH:
