Toxic Nuts and Pets: What Every Pet Parent Should Know
Not all nuts are safe for our furry family members. One of the most dangerous is the macadamia nut. Even a small amount can make dogs seriously ill.

Why Are Macadamia Nuts Dangerous?
Macadamia nuts contain an unknown toxin that can cause:

  • Weakness and difficulty walking
  • Vomiting
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Fever
  • Lethargy

Symptoms usually appear within 12 hours after ingestion and can last up to 48 hours. Other Nuts That Can Be Harmful

While macadamia nuts are especially toxic, other nuts can also create problems:

  •  Walnuts – can contain toxic molds
  •  Pecans – may cause stomach upset and mold toxicity
  • Almonds – choking hazard and digestive irritation
  • Pistachios – high fat content can trigger pancreatitis
  • Mixed nuts with salt or chocolate – extremely dangerous

What To Do If Your Pet Eats Nuts
If you suspect your pet has eaten macadamia nuts or any toxic food:
1. Stay calm
2. Remove any remaining nuts
3. Call your veterinarian immediately
4. Contact Pet Poison Helpline or ASPCA Animal Poison Control
